If you haven’t already gone ahead and bought a zingy-zany PDA, then there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can convert your humble cellphone (any brand/any make) into a (well it gets pretty close) PDA phone. For most people struggling with personal to-do lists, the one thing that they are looking for is, a means to remind them about each item, when its time is due. And this is the singular reason why most (including me until recently!) fail to convert a “to-do” list into a “done” list :-). I guess there is light at the end of the tunnel.
For quite sometime, I have been using google calendar (http://calendar.google.com) for managing my to-do lists, but only last week I stumbled upon a feature of gCal (as it is fondly called), that became my “WOW” moment. Google Calendar, allows you to register your mobile phone number and then it can be configured to send out reminders of *all* the activities that you have logged in your Calendar, as a task list. So effectively you get an SMS reminder on your cellphone for every task that is there in your to-do list. Very neat! No messy software downloads, and no messing with your phone software.
And the biggest plus that I feel (IMHO) is the ease and convenience of typing out your weekly to do list, using your PC, whenever you are connected to the net and voila! You are good to go! GCal will send you a reminder of each of your to-do list item whenever the time for doing it is due. And that is what most of you would have wanted a PDA for isn’t it? Ofcourse if you still feel that a flashy PDA is the way to go then go ahead and buy it by all means. But if you are currently on a tight budget and cannot afford one, than this app from Google, surely takes the cake.
Now, aint that cool??
Steps to configure mobile alerts using gCal:
- Login with your gmail account to http://calendar.google.com
- Click on “Settings” – Top right corner of the screen.
- Click on “Mobile Setup”
- Enter your mobile phone number (remember to select your country properly, and no need to add ‘+91’ before the number)
- You will get a mobile registration code as an sms.
- Enter this code on the website and you are ready to go!
So go ahead and create as many to-do lists as you want and never miss an appointment, as you will be notified through SMS. And the best thing that I like is that it is FREE!
It’d be great if you shared your own experience and also your personal methods of managing your todo lists.
