SAVE WATER!!!

Below is a very inspiring thought by Anshu (my wife). I was indeed moved by the impact of her thoughts. And I definitely want to share this with everyone.

Hi All,

This is a small effort by me for us and for our generations to come. As we are aware of Global Warming and depleting natural resources, lets make people aware and sensitive towards this truth that “Natural Resources will not be forever”, as we think so.

People like us, living in urban areas are aware of this situation, but we do not do anything or we do very little. On the other hand, the rural population is hardly aware of this situation. So lets join hands in making some efforts towards it.

Lets take up water conservation this time.

In my opinion, there are numerous ways to conserve water and energy. We just need to adopt some measures. Imagine, if everyone in India (why India, whole world) save 1 litre water a day, how much water we will save. In fact, the best way to conserve water is to make it a regular habit.

So lets spread this message to everyone we know and join the revolution.

Ways to conserve Water:

Bathroom:

o       Lets start with our daily routine; we waste almost 3 litres every minute while brushing our teeth with running water. So either take a Mug/Tubmler or Install Sensor equipped taps especially in wash-basins and Kitchen.

o       Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Use Mug again.
o       Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.
o       On a dual-flush toilet use the reduced-flow option where possible.

o       Dripping tap could waste as much as 90 litres a week. If the toilet flush handle frequently sticks in the flush position, letting water run constantly, replace or adjust it.

o       Take shorter showers. It saves up-to 400 litres a week.
o       Turn the water off while you shampoo and condition your hair.
o       Don’t use your washing machine until you’ve got a full load. The average wash needs about 95 litres. A full load uses less water than 2 half loads.

Kitchen:

    o       Close taps tightly.
o       Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or by using the defrost setting on your microwave or keep it at room temprature for an hour or so.

o       Wash Vegetables in a bowl of water, washing the cleanest ones first. use this water for your plants.
o       Use Bucket to wash our Utensils, rather than running tap water. Use this used water to water plants like banana tree.

o       In India we have maids to help us at home. Keep a check on your maid/cook, how does she/he uses water. Take little interest in educating them.

o       Every time you boil an egg save the cooled water for your houseplants. They’ll benefit from the nutrients released from the shell.

o       When you are at home, designate one glass for your drinking water each day. This will cut down the effort and water usage to wash utensils.

o       If you accidentally drop ice cubes when filling your glass from the freezer, don’t throw them in the sink. Drop them in a house-plant instead.

Outdoors:

o       Use Bucket again to wash Cars, who knows; in 2040-50 will we be able to see water pressure to wash our cars with Pipes.

o       In south India, we have a tradition to wash porch of our houses every morning. This leads to wastage of atleast 30 litres water everyday per house. Instead use broom to clean your driveway or sidewalk. You can wash this area once or twice a week.

o       Water your garden at the coolest part of the day save evening to reduce evaporation.
o       Do not water the plants everyday. Ask the horticulturist how much water is required to water various plants.
o       Collect rainwater in large tubs of cans and use it to water plants.
o       Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.

o       In your Garden, grow your grass a little longer. It will stay greener than a close mown lawn and need less watering.

o       Bathe your pets outdoors in an area in need of water.

General:

o       If you are going to construct a new house, include water-harvesting plant in your budget. It will actually save your water bill later.

o       Please apply these measures wherever possible in your office too.

Lets try to adopt these measures as they donot need much of our efforts. Let us be an example for people around us.

At my home we have incorporated many of these measures in our life and this is the effort from us to motivate you all to do the same. Please do not keep this mail with yourself. Send this to all you know.

I will be thrilled to know, if I have been able to motivate anyone of you.

Thanks and Regards
Anshu
