The Kannada Kronicles…..

So, the education minister wants to make Kannada compulsory in primary schools..
Nothing wrong in promoting one’s native tounge, especially when you are in a position of power. But hey, the whole idea of *forcing* everbody around you to adopt your *whim* is ridiculous.

And especially forcing schools, which teach in English medium, to close down is outrageous to say the least!
But that is what the state educationminister is out to do! Nearly 1400 schools (as per the media reports) face closure and students be relocated to government schools where the medium of instruction will strictly be “kannada”. It is an outright stupid step to take.
And that too at a time when the world is recognizing Our country and particularly this state as one of IT indutries’ biggest contributor.

Everybody knows that the study and usage of English provides a distinct career advantage when compared to one who studies in a regional language. Simply because English is the single most powerful unifying force in the world today. Inspite of varied ethnicities, everyone is able to effectively communicate with each other in English.

And living in such times, one minister feels for the cause of Kannada. One can only pity the backwardness in thought of this man.

Again I emphasise that respect for one’s language s infact a great virtue. But then respect must be commanded, not demanded!
A similar situation occurred in the past, when the Kannada activists demanded that No hindi movies will be released, till 7 weeks of their release elswhere, in the state because nobody was watching Kannada Movies. Hey isnt that ridiculous??

We non-kannadigas were humorously speculating, that one day we might be forcefully herded into a movie hall to watch an Upendra flick or forgo one day’s salary!! Thankfully that did not happen.

And now once again the joke floating around is that soon, all IT/ITES will have to do programing in Kannada and Oracle and Microsoft will launch exclusive “K” editions of their softwares.

Hahaha.. that would be fun. I hope the minister sees the humor too and realizes that what he is doing is taking us 4 steps behind for every step forward.

God help the poor kids who wish to get an English medium education because their fate is now in the hands of a fanatic!!

Hi! Anand, Y not ‘K’ edition of the software… have you not seen the japaness & chinees version of Microsoft products???

Anyways the point here is not about K version of the software. over the last one year I have been to France, Indonesia and China and I have seen that all theses places have local language, be it directions, bus number, taxi driver or for that matter even the cop speaks local language.

There we some how manage it… but when it comes to Bangalore people insist that they talk in their respective language be it English, Tamil, Hindi…

I have know people who have been in Bangalore for 10 years and have made no effort to learn kannada. It’s a pity.

Finally I don’t support the education minister’s thought. Instead I feel Kannada should be a compulsory language in schools till 10th class (1st, 2nd or 3rd language).

I remember my Amma teaching Kannada to her north Indian colleagues every Tuesday while she was working at Space research center. We need to have a systematic approach to promote local language and not take such hasty decision one early morning.

I hope you’ll now start speaking in Kannada 😉

I also agree that, Kanada should be taught as 2nd or 3rd Language till class 2-4.
But not the first upto 10th standard.

Not only Kannada, any regional state should promote its language but should NOT be forced. Let it be an optional subject after some years.

The formative years of a child are upto 10th/12th, where the person learns the fastest way. If english is removed from here, the student will definitely feel left bedind when it comes to competition…Tomorrow…some will say…CAT and other exams should be in Kannada…ha ha ha…Moreover English has been recognized as Global Language and it’s taking our country on the world map where we are also respected.

I ask one more question…why the minister is forcing Kannada language only..what about Hindi…which is our National Language…Well that states…Nation should go to hell.

I feel people are biased, be it Tamil Nadu / Karnataka…We have witnessed, TamilNadu making fuss againt Hindi long back. Riots were witnessed. Karnataka banned hindi movies..why???…at that time no ban on English movies was made. Dont you think it’s just hypocracy of some people here. North does not make fuss like south states do.

And I want to tell “Mr Foot Loose” that many people are there in karnataka from north who speak Kannada with local people here. They have learnt kannada within months and I am amongst them…its not that some people who do not speak…all should be considered into their category.

    Hey Foot Loose,
I already speak fair degree of kannada, having spent close to 3 years in Bangalore. And I has truly been an interesting experience.

But the point worth noting here is that my learning of Kannada was “BY PERSONAL CHOICE”. And not by “FORCE”.

And that precisely is the case that I tried to put forth.

    Cheers!
